Subscribers to one school of thought hold that there are records in ancient Indian works to prove that some form of plastic and cosmetic surgeries were performed in India even as far back as in the Vedic period. Plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery are two different areas though sometimes the lines between the two may be blurred. Hydrogen peroxide may be the active bleaching ingredient used in such kits or even in do-it-yourself tooth whitening kits.

Another common cosmetic correction employs the use of cosmetic chin surgery which is sometimes also referred to as ‘Mentoplasty’. This procedure involves a restructuring of the chin by inserting implants, through bone reduction techniques. In some cases cosmetic surgeons performing such surgeries recommend an alteration of the shape of the nose as well as changing the shape or size of the chin may make the nose appear larger sometimes.

In modern times, cosmetic laser eye surgery has gained popularity all over the world and because of the expense the treatment involves overseas, it is not uncommon for foreign nationals to seek cosmetic eye surgery in India. In most cases, cosmetic surgeries like cosmetic surgery facelifts are performed to improve or alter appearances. Sometimes however, some forms of cosmetic surgery facelift procedures are performed with a more practical purpose in mind.
